The first Beyond the Mirror was a three-piece instrumental group formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by gifted Polish-born guitarist Michael Sitarski in 1994. After experiencing about as much regional success that an all-instrumental group could have, Michael began looking for a singer in order to expand the band’s commercial appeal. In 1996 he began working with experienced vocalist John Swenson. Together, they wrote over a dozen songs in a short time. This would mark the beginning of a new era for Beyond the Mirror. Original drummer, Steve MacDonald stayed on in the band while original bassist Matt Miller left the group to be replaced, in a bizarre coincidence, by another bass player named Matt Miller. Up until this time, any keyboards that the music called for was supplied in live performances by a computer. All along, the band had hoped to stumble across a keyboard player who could free them from this technology and round out the group. Finally, in early 1997, Josh Becker provided the final piece of the puzzle — not only adding keyboards, but also a second guitar and back-up vocals.
